Coffee is my Language of Love

“Coffee is always a good idea.” – Unknown

Throughout my childhood years, I saw coffee as the ultimate adult beverage, and I recall asking for sips – particularly after it was cool. To me, that’s what being grown-up was all about. My parents obliged my request on rare occasions. Just a spoonful at a time, but I learned to love the taste! Not the bold flavour of black coffee, for mine was fixed with milk and sugar.

Coffee crisp chocolate bars. Tiramisu. Mocha ice cream. I love that flavour!

A cup of coffee was always associated with having loved ones around me. Excellent company and great conversations. When life was throwing it’s curve balls and I needed some support, my Mom would only need to say, “Come on over. I’ve just put the coffee on,” and my outlook instantly improved.

Some people find that coffee interferes with their sleep patterns, keeping them awake at night. Not me! I can drink a cup at 10pm and am still one of those fortunate enough to be asleep before my head hits the pillow. That said, most of my coffee is consumed in the mornings. A good book and a cup of coffee start my day off right.

People are as uniquely individual as their coffee-drinking habits. When I am visiting with my sons and their families, distinct patterns have emerged over the years. At one home, my eldest son and I share some quiet chats in the mornings before the rest of the family wakes. It is a special time for coffee and conversation. Reverse that schedule for the other family. As most of the household heads to bed, my younger son and I have discussions and drink coffee together. I would not trade either of these opportunities for the world! These are moments for bonding, catching up and stepping into one another’s worlds for a brief window of time.

I was taken by the power that savouring a simple cup of coffee can have to connect people and create community.” (Howard Schultz)

So, if you’re ever in need of a listening ear, come on over. The coffee is on!
